Upwork is a global freelance marketplace. Assist matches you with one vetted, U.S.-based executive assistant at a flat $40 an hour. Rates, fees, vetting and contracts, side by side.
Assist Virtual Partners publishes this comparison of its own service with Upwork. Prices and terms come from each company's website as of October 2026.
An Upwork virtual assistant is a freelancer you find, vet, contract and manage on an open marketplace, at a rate the freelancer sets. Assist is a managed service: we vet the assistant, you interview for free, and one person works for you at a flat rate.
The short answer: Choose Assist Virtual Partners when you want one dedicated, college-educated assistant who works from the United States, costs a flat $40 an hour with no fees on top, and comes with free interviews, a free rematch and 30 days' notice to leave. Choose Upwork when you want to run the hiring yourself, set your own budget, and pick from a worldwide pool of freelancers at any rate or skill level you choose.
Assist for one vetted U.S. assistant, Upwork to run the hire yourself.
The comparison table puts an Upwork virtual assistant and an Assist executive assistant side by side on model, rate, fees, location, vetting and exit terms.
Upwork wins on price at the low end and on the size of its pool. Assist wins on a rate you can plan, on vetting done before you meet, and on the speed and terms of getting one person in place.
Overall score: Assist 7.8, Upwork 6.2.
The Upwork virtual assistant hourly rate is whatever the freelancer proposes, and the spread is wide. Upwork's own cost guide lists a median of $10 to $20 per hour for virtual assistants worldwide. The same guide breaks out North American freelancers with more than 1,000 hours and a 90 percent success rate: $12 to $20 or more for administrative work, $20 to $35 or more for marketing, customer service and accounting support, and $38 to $50 or more for executive assistants. Those figures are listed on Upwork's site in October 2026.
The rate you see is not the full virtual assistant cost. Upwork's help center lists a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on all payments to freelancers on its free Basic plan, a reduced 3% for eligible U.S. clients who pay by bank account, and a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 on each new contract. Upwork's July 2026 pricing article describes the Basic fee as 3 or 5 percent and Business Plus as 8 or 10 percent, so your figure depends on plan and billing method. The freelancer also pays Upwork a service fee of 0 to 15 percent, which experienced freelancers price into the rate they quote you.
Assist Virtual Partners charges a flat $40 per hour for the assistant's work. There are no startup fees, no overtime fees and no annual increases, and you only pay once work begins. Billing is a monthly subscription on the 1st, with the first month prorated to your start date, paid by ACH or any major credit card. A 20-hour week costs $800, and the invoice matches the plan.
Side by side, a North American executive assistant on Upwork at $45 per hour plus a 7.99% marketplace fee comes to about $48.60 per hour before the contract fee. A virtual assistant hourly rate of $40 with nothing added is lower and simpler to budget. For context, O*NET reports a 2025 median wage of $36.82 per hour for in-house executive administrative assistants, before payroll taxes and benefits. Upwork wins on price at the low end: if a $12 per hour freelancer overseas can do your data entry well, no managed service will beat that rate.
A freelance virtual assistant on Upwork is an independent professional who markets to many clients at once. Upwork gives you useful signals to judge them: profile, work history, client feedback, talent badges and Job Success Scores. Reading those signals well is your job. Freelancers can be excellent, and the best ones stay busy, so availability varies from one hire to the next.
A dedicated virtual assistant from Assist is one person who works for you, not a rotating pool and not a freelancer splitting attention across a marketplace. Every Assist assistant is a college-educated, U.S.-based professional with experience supporting executives, entrepreneurs and small teams, rigorously vetted, interviewed and continuously trained before you meet them. You still interview for free and choose who you work with. There are no forced matches, and if the fit is wrong, we rematch you quickly at no extra charge.
What Assist settles before your first interview:
What a marketplace leaves to you:
The practical difference shows up in the first month. With a freelancer, you build trust and process from zero and carry the cost of a bad pick in lost time. With a matched assistant, the screening is done, the person is in your time zone, and the first weeks go to learning your inbox, calendar and tools. If you are weighing an assistant against adding headcount instead, read Dedicated virtual assistant vs in-house hire for the full cost picture.
A marketplace gives you choice. A matched assistant gives you one person who already fits.
To hire a virtual assistant on Upwork, you create a client account, verify your phone number or a billing method, and post a job with a title, skills, a scope, an expertise level, a location setting and a budget. You can limit a post to freelancers in the United States and filter further by state or time zone. Freelancers propose their own rates, you can invite up to 30 per job, and you review proposals, interview and then send an hourly or fixed-price contract. A standard post costs nothing unless you hire.
That process rewards people who enjoy recruiting. Writing a post that attracts the right virtual assistant Upwork candidates, screening proposals, interviewing and negotiating a rate can take hours or weeks. You own every step, which is the appeal for some owners and the burden for others. Before you post, read Mistakes to avoid when hiring, because a marketplace will not catch those traps for you.
Assist works two ways, and both skip the job post. With Quick Match, you browse the roster on our website, pick an assistant, and we connect you for an interview. With Assisted Match, you tell us what you need and we hand-select a few candidates. Interviews are free, and you can meet as many candidates as you like. Sasha, our Head of Operations, schedules the interviews, sets your assistant up and checks back after the first few weeks. First-timers get help with communication tools, delegation habits and building a rhythm.
On Upwork, every engagement is its own contract. Hourly contracts bill weekly: you can set a weekly hour limit, the freelancer logs time in a work diary, hours are invoiced on Monday and you have until Friday to review them. Fixed-price contracts run on funded milestones. Each new contract carries the contract initiation fee, even with a freelancer you have used before, and Upwork states that the fee is not refunded if a payment is later refunded or disputed. If a freelancer leaves or underperforms, you close the contract and start the search again.
Assist keeps the paperwork light. There is no long-term contract. You decide how many hours you need, scale up or down at any time, and a plan change takes effect the following month. To end the engagement, you give 30 days' notice and are billed for those final 30 days, with no termination fees and no penalty. If your assistant is not the right fit, we rematch you quickly with no extra fees, so a change of person never means a new search.
Any assistant, freelance or matched, will need logins to your inbox, calendar and tools. Our guide to Securely sharing logins with an assistant walks through password managers and shared vaults. A US based virtual assistant from Assist works in or near your time zone, so permissions can be granted, tested and revoked during your own business day.

The honest frame is marketplace versus virtual assistant agency. Upwork hands you a worldwide pool of virtual assistant companies and independent freelancers in the world, at every price, and expects you to do the vetting, contracting and managing. Assist narrows the field to vetted, U.S.-based executive assistants at one flat rate, and takes on the screening, the setup and the rematch if one is needed. If the marketplace model fits you, Upwork is a strong choice. If you would rather spend your hours on the business, Get started with Assist and meet your candidates for free.
Upwork's cost guide lists a $10 to $20 median hourly rate for virtual assistants worldwide, and $38 to $50 or more for experienced North American executive assistants, as listed on Upwork's site in October 2026. On its Basic plan Upwork adds a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% and a $0.99 to $14.99 fee per contract. Assist Virtual Partners charges a flat $40 per hour with nothing added.
Most marketplace freelancers work as independent contractors, but the label on a platform does not settle the question. The IRS contractor or employee test weighs behavioral control, financial control and the type of relationship, and no single factor decides it. Review the IRS guidance and confirm with an attorney or a CPA before you rely on a classification. Assist's own terms are what its FAQ states, and we do not give legal or tax advice.
With Assist Virtual Partners, you tell us and we rematch you quickly with no extra fees. You interview the new candidates for free, choose who you work with, and your flat $40 rate and terms stay the same. On Upwork, you close the contract, post the job again or invite new freelancers, screen proposals, and pay a fresh contract initiation fee when the next contract starts.
